Remodelling of a neo-Georgian house in Wiltshire
This newly constructed neo-Georgian house had many of the faults common to the work of speculative developers. Although well sited, the house was not well proportioned and had some clumsy details. Francis Johnson and Partners undertook to remodel the interior for new owners.
Much of the joinery trim was replaced and awkwardly shaped rooms were regularised. The addition of arches and vaulting turned bland corridors into spaces more worthy of a classical house. The original very steep straight staircase was replaced by a shallower pitched one with an elegant swept handrail.
