Portico in East Yorkshire

The original portico to this Grade I listed house had been moved to another location in the nineteenth century. The portico was designed by Lord Burlington in the early eighteenth century; the house was later modified by John Carr.

Based on documentary evidence and careful measurements, a replica was constructed in the original location. The balusters, which were much decayed and had been crudely renewed, are a scholarly reconstruction. Much care was taken to avoid damaging existing planting during construction and the wisteria and adjoining nerine clumps have happily survived.

Portland stone was chosen as the closest available substitute for the original Hildenley stone.
